Repurposing discarded magazines into works
from the heart.
Collage is the art form of tearing or cutting small pieces of paper from printed material and affixing them to canvas to create "paintings". For my collages, I use discarded magazines for my "paints". The paper is fixed onto canvas, and once it is varnished, the end product is basically just like a portrait created with paints. The varnish protects the paper pieces from sun damage, dust and moisture.
The fact that my "paints" are discarded magazines brings me great joy. I love turning trash to treasure! The fun thing about collage is that the portrait is created not just with color, but with the patterns on the paper, which adds a whole new dimension and depth to the artwork. I love the puzzle of finding just the right colors and patterns in a magazine to use to piece together a picture of a beloved animal.
